Derm Health Tips A study at Rutgers University revealed that a combination of caffeine and exercise regimen worked synergistically to reduce skin cancer in mice. The research led by Allan Conney, Ph.D. evaluated four groups of mice, those that had water with caffeine, those without caffeine, those subjected to exercise alone, and those both consuming caffeine and exercising. Those drinking caffeine had a 95% increase in apoptosis (increase in cellular destruction) of precancerous cells resulting from Ultraviolet B radiation. Those exercising alone saw a 120% reduction, and those that both consumed caffeine and exercised saw a 400% reduction when compared to the control. So, not only should outdoor enthusiasts bring their sunscreen to the beach or park, but a little caffeine and running shoes as well.
